Britain's getting hot - and it's not good news.
Record heat comes at a devastating cost for UK wildlife.
The record heat in the UK has been welcomed by many, but for British wildlife, it’s another story entirely. Relentless heat has devastating effects, with many fish and insect species already facing an uncertain future.
This year already we have seen many lakes, rivers, and streams reach record temperatures, leaving them uninhabitable to many species of fish, with many lakes drying up entirely. This resulting loss of fish has triggered an imbalance to the delicate eco system of the water, as well as affect the livelihoods of many who depend on the fishing industries.
This devastating impact also affects many insect species for whom the warmer temperature can be deadly. Bees and butterflies are vital to our eco system for pollination, but between the hot weather and the destruction to their habitat, they are dying before they get a chance to provide this vital service to our ecosystem.
We depend on this fragile eco system for our survival, and it is crumbling.
But there is still hope, individuals can make impact in simple ways by reducing energy consumption, reducing unnecessary water use and switching to local and sustainable food sources.
Undoubtably, major corporations hold the biggest power when it comes to combatting climate change. For those of us not running these companies, perhaps our power sits in the pressure we can place on those in charge.
Food for thought, indeed.
