Top Five at Risk : Refugee Rights

Sadly, there are many reasons why some of us are forced to leave home and flee our country.

Have you seen ‘The Swimmers’ on Netflix this week? It is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can fall apart.

It’s not only when bombs drop out of the sky that people become refugees. Everything from drought, starvation, religious persecution, torture or identity-based discrimination (such as gender or sexual orientation) can drive someone to leave everything they know behind. The journey for refugees is never an easy one, and even once they arrive in a legal ‘safe-haven’, many of them face more prejudice in the media and surrounding community.

According to the Guardian, : “Today, the Jungle has gone, but the migrants remain – a report from Human Rights Watch, using data from local charities, estimates there are still about 2,000 migrants “in wooded areas, in and around disused warehouses, and under bridges in and around Calais”, including about 300 unaccompanied children. Several hundred more are camped in a forest near Dunkirk.”

There is hope though.

Each of us can contribute to any of the wonderful refugee support charities, here in the UK or further afield. We have found these charities to be effective, powerful and determined – they are held back only by budget. So if you want to enable them to improve the lives of refugees, please do visit the links below.
