Top Five at Risk : Women's Rights

One in three women

worldwide experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner. Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, and the immediate and long-term physical, sexual, and mental consequences for women and girls can be devastating, including death.”

While there are specific and widely publicised laws to prevent such violence, there are still huge barriers which prevent the laws being enforced. Read more here.

Of course, violence against women and girls is just one aspect of women’s rights. The current situation in Afghanistan is a perfect example of how a change in regime can ruin the health and prospects of all women living within it. The Taliban have shut schools, imposed bans on expression, autonomy and independence, and even publicly beat individuals daring to speak out against these illegal restrictions.

AnotherWay Now are supporting some incredible women’s rights activists working throughout the region, but for their own safety, they will have to remain anonymous.

We have organised live film and panel discussion events around the world to address women’s rights to health care, employment, expression, safety and movement, to name just a few. While we would love to toot the horn of those we collaborate with, it’s very likely that doing so would put them at risk of being discovered by their oppressors, with terrible consequences. So perhaps you can light a candle in their honour today, or donate to any of these wonderful organisations in their name:

Malala Fund : Giving Afghanistan’s girls access to education

Orchid Project : Ending FGM/C

SheShouldRun : Giving women political power

Centre for Reproductive Rights : Advocating for women’s reproductive rights across the world

Thank you. You’re making a quiet, but hugely important, difference to women around the world.
